File Hash Calculator
Compute a SHA digest of the selected file bytes with browser Web Crypto.
How to use
- Choose the file, select the same SHA algorithm used by the value you are comparing, and run.
Capabilities and scope
Choose SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, or SHA-1; the complete file ArrayBuffer is hashed and rendered as lowercase hexadecimal.
How it works
File.arrayBuffer() is passed to crypto.subtle.digest and each result byte is serialized to two hexadecimal digits.
Example
Hashing the same file with SHA-256 again produces the same 64-hex-character digest.
Useful for
- Compare a downloaded file with a publisher-provided SHA digest
Before you use it
- A matching digest supports byte integrity but does not authenticate the publisher or replace a digital signature; SHA-1 is unsuitable for collision-sensitive security.
Frequently asked questions
Is the file uploaded to a server?
No. Its bytes are processed locally by browser Web Crypto.
