Time Duration Calculator
Break the actual millisecond difference between two local date-times into days, hours, minutes, seconds, and total seconds.
How to use
- Enter start and end local date-times.
- Calculate.
- Review day/hour/minute/second parts, total seconds, and direction.
Capabilities and scope
Include time of day as well as date, and see both elapsed magnitude and whether the end is after or before the start.
How it works
Both `datetime-local` values are parsed as `Date` values in the device's local zone. Their epoch-millisecond difference is taken, then its absolute magnitude is decomposed by 24 hours, hour, minute, and second.
Example
An end 1 hour, 1 minute, and 1 second later displays `0d 1h 1m 1s` and 3661 total seconds.
Useful for
- Measure elapsed time between work timestamps
- Read an event timestamp gap in human units
- Check whether an end precedes a start
Before you use it
- Inputs use the device-local time zone, so a DST transition can make actual elapsed time differ from a simple wall-clock subtraction.
- The result is not decomposed into variable-length months or years.
Frequently asked questions
Is an end before the start an error?
No. The magnitude is decomposed as a positive duration and direction is shown as before.
Is a day always treated as 24 hours?
The decomposition uses 86,400,000 ms per day, while the initial epoch difference can still reflect local time-zone transitions.
