Decimal Time Converter
Convert an hh:mm:ss clock time into decimal hours and show equivalent total minutes and seconds.
How to use
- Enter hours, minutes, and seconds with the time control.
- Calculate.
- Review decimal hours and equivalent total minutes/seconds.
Capabilities and scope
For example, represent 12:30 as 12.5 hours for calculations that are easier with decimal values.
How it works
Decimal hours are `hour + minute/60 + second/3600` and are displayed to six decimal places. Total minutes and seconds are derived by multiplying the decimal-hour value by 60 and 3600.
Example
12:30:00 is 12 + 30/60 = 12.500000 hours, 750 minutes, or 45,000 seconds.
Useful for
- Convert clock times for decimal-hour calculations
- Check a time value before spreadsheet use
- Compare hour, minute, and second representations
Before you use it
- This expresses ordinary clock time in decimal hours; it is not the historical system that divides a day into ten decimal hours.
