Syllable Estimator
Estimate syllables by counting runs of English vowel letters a,e,i,o,u,y in each word.
How to use
- Enter primarily English text and run the estimate.
Capabilities and scope
Each word contributes the number of vowel-group matches, with a minimum of one when no group is found.
How it works
For each lowercase word, /[aeiouy]+/g matches are counted and a no-match word contributes one.
Example
hello has two vowel groups, e and o, so the estimator returns about two syllables.
Useful for
- Get a rough syllable count for English prose
Before you use it
- No pronunciation dictionary or phonological rules are used, so silent-e words, diphthongs, names, and non-English languages can be inaccurate.
Frequently asked questions
Does it always match spoken syllables?
No. It is only a spelling-based vowel-group heuristic.
