Unix Permission Calculator
Convert Unix permissions between three-digit octal and nine-character rwx notation.
How to use
- Enter 755 or rwxr-xr-x and run.
Capabilities and scope
A dedicated runner exposes owner, group, and other read/write/execute bits; setuid, setgid, and sticky bits are outside its model.
How it works
Each octal digit maps 4/2/1 to r/w/x; symbolic input is split into three-character groups and converted back to bit sums.
Example
755 becomes rwxr-xr-x.
Useful for
- Check basic chmod permission conversions
Before you use it
- Special fourth-digit permission bits, ACLs, and umask effects are not calculated.

Frequently asked questions
Does it fully support 4755?
No. The dedicated UI focuses on the basic owner/group/other permission triplets rather than special bits.
