Waist-to-Height Ratio
Calculate waist-to-height ratio and the NICE adult bands implemented by the runner.
How to use
- Enter waist circumference and height in the same centimetre unit.
- Optionally enter BMI to check scope of the NICE adult bands.
Capabilities and scope
It shows waist/height ratio, half-height, centimetre difference from the 0.5 line, and optional BMI applicability information.
How it works
ratio=waist/height; for adults with BMI<35, the runner labels 0.4–0.49 healthy, 0.5–0.59 increased, and ≥0.6 high.
Example
Height 170 cm and waist 80 cm give about 0.471, five centimetres below half-height.
Interpretation
An optional BMI of 35 or more is flagged as outside the scope of these adult NICE bands.
Useful for
- Use a simple central-adiposity screening ratio
- Compare waist measurement with the half-height reference
Before you use it
- The ratio alone does not diagnose individual risk, especially outside the stated guideline scope.

Frequently asked questions
How is a ratio below 0.4 shown?
The runner labels it below the NICE classified range because that band has no separate name in this classification.
