BMI Calculator
Calculate BMI and CDC adult BMI category for people age 20 and older.
How to use
- Enter age, weight in kilograms, and height in centimetres.
- Calculate and review BMI, category, and the reference healthy-BMI weight range.
Capabilities and scope
The runner requires age 20+ and returns BMI, adult category, and the weight range corresponding to BMI 18.5–<25 at the entered height.
How it works
BMI is weight(kg)/height(m)² using CDC adult bands below 18.5, 18.5–<25, 25–<30, and obesity categories from 30 upward.
Example
A 70 kg, 170 cm adult has BMI about 24.22, in the healthy-weight band.
Interpretation
The runner subdivides BMI 30+ into 30–<35, 35–<40, and ≥40 classes.
Useful for
- Use BMI as one adult screening indicator
- See the weight range corresponding to CDC healthy BMI at a given height
Before you use it
- BMI does not directly measure body fat or diagnose disease, and ages 2–19 require age- and sex-specific percentile interpretation.
Edge cases
- Inputs under age 20 are rejected by this adult calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Should a very muscular person interpret BMI by itself?
No. BMI does not distinguish body composition and should be considered with other health information.
