Mechanical Advantage
Calculate actual mechanical advantage as output force divided by input force.
How to use
- Enter input force.
- Enter output force and calculate.
Capabilities and scope
Using matching force units, the result is a dimensionless force multiplier.
How it works
It uses MA = outputForce/inputForce.
Example
100 N input producing 400 N output gives MA=4.
Useful for
- Compare measured force multiplication of a lever or pulley
- Evaluate actual force gain of a mechanism
Before you use it
- It does not automatically model displacement ratio, efficiency, or friction, and input force cannot be zero.
Frequently asked questions
Does MA=4 mean four times the energy?
No. An ideal machine trades force for displacement; it does not create work.
